First Friday Gallery Walk

There are two excellent exhibitions currently on display which will be shown during the First Friday Gallery Walk.

The Members’ Lounge, which will run until October 17, consists of seven rooms of paintings and pottery created by more than 100 artists from Southport’s Associated Artists. Works are done in a wide variety of styles, mediums and sizes, including a mini-gallery, with paintings smaller than 9×12. Prints, cards and gift items are also available.

The second exhibit features beautiful quilts made by members of the Oak Island Beach Quilters, who regularly donate quilts to charity. The overall theme of the Quilt Show is “birds” which appear in one form or another in every quilt. The 18 quilts in the show (through September 17) were judged by a quilt team who selected the items to display and awarded first, second, third and fourth place ribbons and several honorable mentions. There are also displays of charity quilts, donated to various charities such as Habitat for Humanity, and honor quilts that are donated to veterans and public service employees.

The gallery walk also includes refreshments and live music. It will also feature live demonstrations from several associate artists of the Southport Artists. Cheryl Lee will be building clay pots with dowels showing a fun and easy way to make a vase or pot. Johnny Robertson will demonstrate a watercolor pouring technique, showing its transparency and luminous properties, and will complete his painting with a brush. Robert Salemme will demonstrate traditional acrylic brush painting and Diane Sloan will create a watercolor portrait.

The walk will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, September 2 at the Franklin Square Gallery, 130 E. West St., Southport.
