Two local coastal businesses are on the verge of becoming one. SoDel Concepts, a Rehoboth Beach-based hotel company, has announced the acquisition of Surf Bagel, a longtime local favorite.

Surf Bagel was founded in 2004 by brothers and passionate surfers Dave and Tom Vitella. A hit with locals and tourists alike, Surf Bagel specializes in New York-style bagels, flavored cream cheese, bagel sandwiches, and other breakfast and lunch items.

When Dave Vitella started to envision his next chapter, he wanted to make sure that Surf Bagel continued to thrive.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better fit than with Scott Kammerer and SoDel Concepts,” said Vitella. “The only constant in life is change, and I knew we wouldn’t be doing that forever. SoDel is the perfect solution; they are the best at what they do, and they will continue to honor the loyalty and dedication of Surf Bagel employees and customers.

The Kammerer and Vitella families have long contributed to the Cape region. Scott and Dave have trained together and against each other for many years, and their children have all grown up in the area.

“SoDel Concepts is a strong, well-managed organization with the same commitment to quality and consistency. We trust them to move the brand forward and keep the Surf Bagel tradition alive, ”said Vitella.

The sale is expected to close on December 1, and Surf Bagel stores will be the company’s 14th and 15th locations. Matt’s Fish Camp recently opened in Fenwick and Ocean View Brewing Company is under construction.

Chef Matt Haley, recipient of the 2014 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award, founded SoDel Concepts in 2004.
