From May 24 to June 22, 2022, Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) invites the public to participate in two separate projects at and near Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. A public meeting to discuss the two projects is scheduled for 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at the Fessenden Center Annex, 47013 Buxton Back Rd, Buxton, NC 27920.

The public meeting will begin with a presentation by Superintendent David Hallac and conclude with an opportunity to provide comments and ask questions.

Project 1: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Repair and Landscape Improvement Environmental Assessment

The National Park Service is proposing to rehabilitate the interior and restore the exterior of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and its character-defining elements, repair or replace deteriorated materials and finishes, and selectively reverse unsympathetic treatments added to the lighthouse and its oil house after 1920.

Additionally, the goal of the project is to provide a more immersive experience of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Station by defining walking paths and considering ways to improve the resilience of the Lighthouse Station and grounds suitable for an environment. coast subject to many visits.

The Seashore would like to receive public input as it develops plans to build a multi-use trail along Lighthouse Road in the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse District.

A new trail would provide users from the village of Buxton, North Carolina with a resilient, safe and accessible non-motorized route to many key shoreline use areas, including the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, museum and beach. monitored. The path would also be enhanced with orientation, educational information and benches.
