PANAMA CITY BEACH – Anglers of all ages will have the opportunity to tackle the grand prix at Panama City Beach Fishing Rodeo, which returns for its second year.

The fishing rodeo will start on September 23 and run until October 9. Hosted by Captain Anderson’s Marina, 5550 N. Lagoon Drive, the three-weekend, 17-day event will feature 11 species of fish and seven angler divisions. It also features daily entertainment, vendors and more.

Organizers Joe Laymon and James Pulliam are bringing the rodeo back for its second year.

The Panama City Beach Fishing Rodeo will be based at Captain Anderson's Marina on Grand Lagoon.

“There was a clear need for a fishing tournament (in Panama City Beach),” Laymon said. “After a few conversations with many captains and boat operators, we decided to come up with a venue and tournament that people would be excited about.”

Participation in the rodeo is open to the public, with the registrant’s own boat or charter. Registration will remain open throughout the tournament.

The tournament will have two weigh-ins each day, the first from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Daily prizes will be awarded at the end of each day, and the general grand prizes will be presented on October 9 after the final weigh-in.

Fireworks will follow to celebrate the fishing tournament.

This year’s event will benefit the Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. Additionally, fundraisers will take place throughout the tournament to benefit the Food4Kidz and Camo Dreams charities.

The Fishing Rodeo will be hosted by Captain Anderson's Marina.

Many activities are planned for each fishing rodeo day for the enjoyment of the whole family. Attractions include vendors, ax throwing, a cornhole tournament and live music by the Will Thompson Band, Gilley & The Girl, Alex Napier and Nate Pennington.

In addition to this year’s event, there will be a Battle of the Bands performance featuring local and regional artists, a fun 5k run and a food truck festival. Additionally, there will be food from Hunt’s Oyster Bar, Paparazzi Gourmet Deli and Dockside Market & Grill and drinks from the Upper Deck at the Marina.

With last year’s success, organizers plan to double the number of participants and visitors for this year’s event.

“We had almost 120 attendees at last year’s rodeo. As far as foot traffic goes, we had about 12,000 visitors that passed by,” Pulliam said. “We plan to expand this event every year, and eventually hope to have a month-long rodeo.”

Return of the Children’s Rodeo

The Children's Fishing Rodeo will take place on October 1st.

The second Reel Kids Fishing Rodeo, sponsored by The Reel Ladies of PCB, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 1 at Captain Anderson’s Marina. The Kids Fishing Rodeo is designed for ages 5-16.

Young anglers are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, but there will be a limited number of loaner routes available. Each child will take home a new rod and reel for their participation, as well as a free Reel Kids t-shirt.

“There’s something for everyone at the PCB Fishing Rodeo,” Laymon said. “We are excited for this year’s event and hope everyone has the opportunity to come fishing and have a great time.”
