World Surf League: SYDNEY, NSW / AUS (Friday April 1, 2022) – The Mad Mex Maroubra Pro 2022 presented by NG Farah World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS)1000 will welcome future surfing champions this Tuesday and Wednesday April 5th and 6th. This is the only Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series event to land in Sydney, making it a special opportunity for competitors who will be able to surf one of the best spots in town with just their other competitors from the programming.

The two-day elite WSL QS1000 ranked event will see the best rising stars from Australia and New Zealand return to Maroubra beach in a bid to secure the first valuable points for the 2023 Challenger Series qualifier. The event will be webcast live on both days via Kayo Sports and the World Surf League.

Aspiring professional surfer Koda Killorn grew up in the Maroubra surf community amongst many world class surfers. He will hope to make his mark by using his local knowledge from the break to take a points lead for the 2023 season.

“Having a WSL QS1000 event on my home beach is awesome,” said Killorn. “Surfing is such a big part of our community in Maroubra and everyone is so supportive. If I can do well at this event in front of my family, friends and the local team, that would be pretty special.”

On what to expect from Sydney beach right now, Killorn says: “What’s unique about Maroubra is that it can produce powerful, set waves with big open faces, but also has a cull section near the beach that can provide an extra opportunity for points if you can connect it just right.

For the current WSL QS Australia/Oceania regional rankings, Maroubra Pro contestant Nyxie Ryan (Lennox Head) is just as important as any professional event. “No matter where you sit in the rankings as a surfer, the rankings can shift with every event. I just try to surf as many rounds as possible because you learn something every time you paddle, win or lose and every point counts.”

Consistently good results at WSL QS events can lead to Challenger Series and World Championship Tour (WCT) qualification, even CT surfers must rack up points on regional tours throughout the year.

The 2022 Mad Mex Maroubra Pro presented by NG Farah will take place from April 5-6 and will be webcast via worldsurfleague.com and the WSL app and via Kayo Sports.
