WALES – Attracting people from near and far, Oak Haven Family Campground has plenty to offer for the upcoming camping season.

From May 1 through Columbus Day weekend, the campground, located at 22 Main St. in Wales, will be open to visitors.

Oak Haven Family Campground is owned by Penny Jalbert. His nephew Zachary Berry and his wife Becky have helped Jalbert run the camp since her husband passed away.

Offering a variety of activities each weekend, Becky said: ‘We have everything down to a luau, a light night, Christmas in July, Father’s Day and Mother’s Day. [events]as well as bands playing on holiday weekends.

Other attractions include a swimming pool, playground, basketball and volleyball courts, as well as nearby Lake George, which campers can visit to kayak, fish or relax on the beach. the city, Becky said.

From opening day to the end of the school year, Becky said the weeks were quieter. Once summer vacation rolled around, she said the campground filled up and weekly activities increased, such as flag football, field baseball and crafts for the kids.

With a 50-50 mix of locals and non-locals, Becky said the number of campers visiting Oak Haven differs each year. Over the past two years, she has recalled an “exorbitant” number due to COVID-19. “When the pandemic hit, people came here to hang out because the campgrounds stayed open,” Becky said.

She noted that many of their campers include those visiting the Brimfield Flea Market, which takes place in May, July and September.

“We get locals too,” Becky said. “[The campground] is so far out in the woods that it makes you feel like you’re somewhere else.”

She continued, “I think people want to camp locally, especially now,” with rising gas prices. This resulted in many seasonal campers.
Oak Haven Family Campground offers sites for tents, motorhomes and trailers.
Becky described their campground as “old school mom and dad”.

“We’re trying to call everyone back and find out how many kids they have, how big their unit is,” etc. “We want to connect with our campers,” she said.

The campground is full for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. As of press time, Becky said there are only a few spots left for Columbus Day. “We fill up fast,” she said. Those wishing to book for a holiday weekend are encouraged to do so in winter.

Holiday weekends aside, Becky said they were “fairly open and flexible” for the rest of the season.
