CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) – We have an update on the Carolina Beach City Council vote to purchase the remaining Freeman Park private plots.

Carolina Beach Mayor LeAnn Pierce said the majority of reviews about the purchase were positive.

“This is a victory not only for the residents of Carolina Beach, but for New Hanover County and for the state,” said Pierce. “So many people use this park.”

Pierce says the city has been looking to buy the rest of Freeman Park for more than 3 years, and finally came to an agreement last week to pay $ 7 million for the remaining portions of the land, paving the way for aid. government for future beach renovation efforts.

“Now that we have a purchase price, we can apply for grants and different things from different organizations,” Pierce said. “Our state partners and our departmental partners. Now we can look for the funding. In the past, we couldn’t do this because we didn’t own the property.

In addition to grants for the projects, Pierce says the grants will also be used to pay for part of the purchase amount, with the remainder coming from fees charged to access the park.

Pierce says the city has a lot of ideas on how to get the most out of heavy buying.

“We hope we can do educational tours for school kids, different things like that,” Pierce added. “Maybe UNCW can have educational studies there. Lots of possibilities.

Pierce says Freeman Park will benefit residents and visitors for years to come.

“It’s a beautiful property, it’s 300 acres,” Pierce said. “This will be the largest park in New Hanover County. We look forward to developing this as something for future generations to enjoy. ”
